Common On-site Mistakes Between Cuplock and Coupler Scaffolding

During erection and acceptance of support scaffolding, senior foremen and young technicians often mistakenly apply parameters from different standards. The root cause lies in two widely adopted specifications for support scaffolding sharing similar parameter values. Construction crews tend to rely on past experience, which easily leads to incorrect application of standards.

Seasoned foremen who have worked for years are familiar with traditional coupler scaffolding and the JGJ130-2011 standard. They are accustomed to construction limits: 500mm cantilever length and 300mm exposed screw length. Nowadays, cuplock scaffolding is widely adopted on site. Many workers still follow old experience without understanding the allowable tolerance under cuplock specifications. Over-conservative construction practices unnecessarily raise workload and project costs.

Young technicians face the opposite situation. They mostly work with modern cuplock scaffolding and are well-versed in the more lenient parameters of JGJ/T231-2021. When occasionally handling coupler scaffolding projects, they habitually adopt cuplock parameters. This mismatch between construction practice and specifications triggers rectification requirements during acceptance inspections.

 

Scope of Application of the Two Specifications

To avoid parameter misapplication, follow the core rule: Use the matching standard for each system; do not cross-apply parameters between different systems.

JGJ/T231-2021: For wedge-type cuplock steel tube support scaffolding. It is the mainstream system with detailed parameter settings and greater construction tolerance.

JGJ130-2011: For traditional coupler steel tube support scaffolding. It imposes stricter control standards with almost no allowable tolerance.

Core Principle: Cuplock scaffolding follows JGJ/T231-2021; coupler scaffolding follows JGJ130-2011. The scaffold system must correspond strictly to its specification.

Adjustable U-head Prop

Three specification requirements must all be satisfied for adjustable props on cuplock scaffolding:

The cantilever length extending beyond the centerline of the top horizontal ledger or double channel beam shall not exceed 650 mm;

The exposed length of the screw rod shall not exceed 400 mm;

The penetration length of the screw into the vertical tube or double channel beam shall not be less than 150 mm.

Cuplock scaffolding adopts relatively flexible parameters with wider adjustment ranges. The 150 mm penetration depth forms the foundation for structural stability and is a mandatory requirement for construction compliance.

Base Adjustable Screw and Base Ledger

Per Clause 6.2.5 for cuplock scaffolding:

The penetration length of the screw into the vertical tube ≥150 mm;

The exposed length of the screw ≤300 mm;

The centerline of the bottom ledger (base ledger) shall be no more than 550 mm above the base plate of the adjustable base.

The exposed screw limit for base plates aligns with coupler scaffolding standards. However, the allowable height for the base ledger is more lenient. This detail is frequently overlooked and causes deviations during acceptance.

Coupler Support Scaffolding (JGJ130-2011) Parameters

Extended Length of Top Vertical Tube

The length of vertical tube extending from the centerline of the top horizontal ledger to the support point shall not exceed 500 mm. Compared with the 650 mm cantilever limit for cuplock scaffolding, coupler scaffolding enforces stricter standards with no tolerance. This parameter creates the most frequent confusion between new and experienced site staff.

General Requirements for Base Plates and U-head Props

Uniform requirements for adjustable bases and adjustable props of coupler scaffolding:

Exposed screw length ≤300 mm;

Screw penetration length into vertical tube ≥150 mm. These fixed parameters must be strictly implemented on site.

Key Distinction for Base Ledgers of Two Scaffold Systems

Critical differences must be highlighted:

Cuplock scaffolding (Clause 6.2.5): The height of the base ledger is measured from the base plate, limited to ≤550 mm.

Coupler scaffolding (Clause 6.3.2): The height of the base ledger is measured from the bottom end of vertical tubes, limited to ≤200 mm.

The reference benchmark and limit values are completely different and cannot be interchanged. Separate compliance checks are required during construction and acceptance.

Core Parameter Comparison of the Two Specifications

Clear overall differences:

Cuplock scaffolding: Max cantilever of top prop =650 mm; Max exposed screw length=400 mm

Coupler scaffolding: Max cantilever of top prop=500 mm; Max exposed screw length=300 mm

For both systems: Max exposed base screw length =300 mm; minimum screw penetration into vertical tube ≥150 mm.

The base ledger requirement is the biggest differentiator: cuplock systems adopt a 550 mm limit measured from base plates, while coupler systems adopt a 200 mm limit measured from the bottom of vertical tubes. This is a key inspection point during routine acceptance.
